Old-time basketball fans, especially Catholics, still have fond memories of the annual Dubuque Diocesan Basketball Tournament that drew dozens of tiny high schools -- most that no longer exist -- from 1925 to 1959 to Loras College



The 1965 Dubuque Flood

Dubuque's worst flood occurred in April 1965.

Snowmelt, heavy rains and a deep frost contributed to record flooding across much of the upper Midwest in March and again in April. A series of winter storms in March produced abundant snow throughout Minnesota and parts of Wisconsin, followed by a deluge that melted the abnormally deep snow pack, resulting in even more water rushing into streams and rivers, according to the National Weather Service.

The early 1960s was an era of transformation in Dubuque, Boys’ hairstyles transformed almost overnight from flat tops to mop tops. Drive-in restaurants, drive-in theaters and drive-thru banks were popping up all over. The city’s landscape changed, as Dutch Elm disease took its toll on our trees. And Melody Mill, the area's premier dance hall, met the wrecking ball.
